How we helped Primatene Mist grow its lead by highlighting asthma's triggers instead of its symptoms.
Primatene Mist is the number one over-the-counter asthma inhaler brand — and the category leader can't be complacent. The challenge: push further, cementing leadership among core consumers 40 and older, while inviting a new, younger generation of asthma sufferers into the brand.
A category leader that can't stand still.
Primatene Mist is the number one over-the-counter asthma inhaler brand, and, in fact, established the category. As a leader, you can't be complacent — you need to push into new marketplace opportunities using research and consumer insights to make smart brand decisions. The business challenge was to continually push Primatene Mist further, to cement its leadership among core consumers aged 40 and above while inviting a new, younger generation of asthma sufferers into the brand.
It isn't about symptoms. It's about "what if?"
The real story of living with asthma is the quiet, constant tension of knowing a trigger could surface at any moment: pollen drifting through a rural afternoon, exhaust and smoke irritating an urban commute. Sufferers don't just manage symptoms; they manage the emotional minefield of "What if?"
Give the triggers a face.
We built a creative platform around a single, unforgettable idea: give the triggers a face. The result was the dreaded Monster, a character that embodies the threats asthma sufferers navigate daily, from pollen and plants in rural areas to smoke and pollution in urban ones. The Monster is always waiting, and always outmatched by Primatene Mist. The character reframes the brand promise from "relief when it happens" to "confidence before it does."
Primatene Mist lets you "Breathe Easy Again."
A face for the fear — and a reason to reach for Primatene first.
In consumer testing, the platform recorded breakthrough levels of interest, motivation, and purchase intent, above historical CPG OTC norms for the segment, not just for the product. That segment-level benchmark is a meaningful signal: the idea outperformed a category, not a comparable set.
In market, the campaign drove increased sales in the most recent six-month period ending June 30, extending Primatene Mist's leadership among its core 40-plus audience while opening the door to younger urban and rural consumers. The Monster gave Primatene Mist something no competitor could copy: a face for the fear, and a reason to reach for Primatene first.
Outperforming the category.
